Amnesty International USA is part of Amnesty International, the world’s largest grassroots human rights organization made up of over 10 million people in more than 150 countries and territories.
Amnesty was founded in 1961 to campaign for “a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments.”
Amnesty USA is financed largely by donations from its membership. It does not accept donations from governments for its research or campaigning. It is a democratically governed, grassroots membership organization, which means that its members vote on key policy issues and elect its Board of Directors.
